searching pod

You might recall several month ago I started to talk about a project called podindex for indexing the pod.

The idea is to provide an easy way for anyone (but mainly for the beginners) to do full text and keyword search on the full documentation of perl and the modules for any term, including common words like for or while and strange strings like $^O or ....

Now, after I installed Siesta and Subversion it was a piece of cake to setup a mailing list and a repository for this project too.

If you are interested in more details or maybe you'd like to help us in the development of podindex, we really need your help.

I'm working on the same thing now!

Hi, I just found your journal entry in a web search. I guess I'm not the first to think about POD indexing. ;-)

I started a new project for manually indexing the core PODS; see http://pod-indexing.annocpan.org/

What do you think about perlindex?

Looks very good, and it's probably better for direct browsing.

My goal is slightly different, as I'm focusing mainly on keyword search. Therefore I'm also adding synonyms and alternative names, in case someone doesn't know exactly what to look for. Let's say someone is wondering "does Perl have a 'mid' function like Basic?" If we add 'mid' as a synonym for "substr", they'll be able to find it.

I'm also aiming for a more comprehensive index and for integrating it into "perldoc".
