The editor I use on Win32, Ultra Edit, can be customized to take a selection from one window, feed it to an arbitrary command, and creating a new window with the results. When said command is a short Perl script that turns STDIN into an HTTP POST to the magic URL that sends an SMS message to my wife's cellphone, I can drop her a note without having to move my hands from the keyboard.
