Improving airflow inside your computer

Here's a trick for improving the airflow inside your computer, which will either let it run a bit cooler or might let you run it with one fewer fan. Take out the IDE cables (the big ribbon things connecting your drives/CDs to the motherboard), carefully noting which side of the motherboard (and drives) the red edge is. Take a knife (or razor blade), and cut lengthwise slits into the cables, so that instead of one long ribbon you have 6-8 smaller ones. I only had to cut along the wires for an inch, then peel the strands apart by hand. Then bundle the smaller ribbons up into one clump with some tie-down straps. Plug 'em back in.

If you're really paranoid (like I am), do this on fresh cables. They only cost a couple of bucks.

Contrary to how it may seem from my last few posts, I really don't like hardware all that much. It's a necessary evil.

You could also buy cables like this.
Although they run about $10. On the
gripping hand these cables are designed
for DMA-66 or 100, unlike the standard
flat cables shipped with hardware.
