I hate Visio too, although I hate it less than dia. For the job I wanted to do, Access really is the best tool.
Open source isn't everything.

Excel still kicks OpenOffice's butt, and I haven't found something better than FileMaker to give to non-techies when I want them to manage their data.
Philip Greenspun talks about this on IT Conversations. He says that open source hasn't come up with a good word processor because it was invented a long time ago. The propietary ones have had plenty of time to get their act together and give customers what they want.
