German Perl Workshop day 1

After a rather pleasant train journey with Leo and Pepl we arrived at the twisting maze of steel-enforced concrete that is the Ruhr Universitaet. Thanks to a satelite image we found the place to the room where the workshop takes place. First person I saw was Nicholas Clark, who said one sentence in German and then switched back to English (ok for me, so I can practice a bit..)

There was a tutorial on Higher Order Perl, which covered the part of the book that I did understand (i.e. the first hundred pages or so). HOP requires very concentrated reading, so I guess I shouldn't have expected the talk to cover the more complex issues.

After lunch (Subway) we headed back to the venue and found some infos on how to the wireless running. It requires something called a 'cisco compatible vpnc client', whatever that is. Fortunately, one of the Orgas had the required debs on a USB stick. Unfortunately, my kernel wasn't compilet to handle it. So after recompiling my kernel (something I love to do on a workshop where I should do some presentations and without internet connection to get help - surprisingly it worked) I still didn't get it running. After applying some route-foo provided by a helpful knowledable person - I have a connection! Yay!

Now Leo is talking about parrot, then there are more talks. Let's see if the network continues to work (for me)...
