A few days ago I asked out on comp.databases.oracle.misc if the source code for tnsping was available anywhere, since I thought an extension would be nice. I got this rather interesting response from one Oracle DBA:
The code is closed source and reverse engineering is prohibited I would advise you would waste your time with something else.
Reverse engineering is prohibited? Oh, yeah? Well, I'm gonna move to *Mongolia*, reverse engineer the code on my laptop and publish it for all the world to see! What are you gonna do then Oracle?! Huh? HUH?
Ok, maybe not. Anyway, as the second followup suggested, I'll just do a port scan to see if the listener is up.
