G5 iMac

I'm tempted to get one of the new G5 iMacs. They look extremely slick. I worry about how easy it is to upgrade, however. Also, shipping with a default of only 256MB of RAM is just lame. The "lick me" interface is slick, but too RAM hungry for 256.

Decisions, decisions...

G5 iMac Upgradability

According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86812, almost everything but the video hardware is serviceable/upgradeable.

I completely agree about the RAM--the machine is being severely choked with just 256 MB. Twice that is a good starting point. IMHO, Apple is shooting itself in the foot over this; reviewers will do their thing on the stock unit and conclude that, 'it's a fine machine but its performance sucks.' Apple should raise the price if it has to, but it shouldn't ship any G5 iMacs with less than 512 MB.

One more thing...

The case design of the G5 iMac provides excellent access to the internals. Undo 3 captive screws from the case back, lift the cover off, and here's what you see:
