Synchronicity

A number of separate events have pulled together recently to make me look more closely at Bioinformatics.

  1. At TPC someone[1] came up to me after Damian Conway's "Data Munging" tutorial and started talking to me about the kinds of Bioinformatics problems that we wanted to solve with Perl.
  2. gnat has been raving about Bioinformatics in his journal for some time now. gnat's a bright kid. He generally knows what's going on :)
  3. Last night at a dinner party someone asked me what Perl was used for. I started to explain the usual e-commerce examples, but then the Bioinformatics stuff popped into my head and I talked about that for a while. Suddenly it seemed exciting to me too.

So, this morning I take a look at the web site for the ORA Bioinformatics Conference. I'm idly wondering whether I could give a "Data Munging for Bioinformatics" tutorial at the conference when I notice that today is the final day to submit proposals. Luckily they have a handy online submission form, so I fill it in with details of the (vapourware) tutorial. I wonder how many other people have submitted similar proposals.

I guess I should buy the Bioinformatics book now :)

[1] Whose name I've completely forgotten. If you're reading this then please email me like you said you would - I was a lot more interested than I might have seemed.
