PC Version

As a Linux user, it's starting to annoy me when I see shrink-wrapped software packages that claim to be a "PC Version". What they actually mean is that it's a "Windows Version". It won't run on my PC no matter how hard I try[1].

[1] OK, unless I install something like WINE.

I have been a PC user for many years, but my PC over the past 15 years has been a Mac. :-) Most Mac users eventually got over it, and accepted that PC == Windows/DOS.

I wonder if there is a case for trading standards. It would be nice for someone to take a big corporate down a peg or two, when they blindly assume everyone uses Windows.

In the past I've had to delicately explain to senior managers that not all linux and mac users have the correct apps to view word documents and excel spreadsheets. The puzzled looks on their faces is only disheartening.

Wine

Wine runs more than less for me. I mean I can run Microsoft Word under WineX on my x86 linux box, even if all the bits (e.g. the office assitant) don't work.

However, I still prefer openoffice
