We just had a bailiff come to the front door. He was collecting an outstanding VAT bill that my company has. Luckily I've just cashed in some savings plans and had just enough money in my personal account to pay the full amount.
If I hadn't been able to do that, he was empowered to remove all of the company's computer equipment.
Nasty business I shall be a bit more careful about paying my VAT bill in future.

When I was a limited company my accountant advised me never to upset the VAT man - because they are part of HM Customs and Excise they have powers that ordinary mortals don't. I think this even includes search/entry/seizure without a warrant.
The Inland Revenue on the other hand abide by the "normal" rules.

Bet you're pleased that his Royal Chancellorness has decided to abolish automatic fines for late payment of VAT
