Apress have sent me a copy of the news edition of Beginning Perl. On the front cover it says:

Master key Perl concepts such as CGI programming, databasing and object oriented programming with this comprehensive guide

"Databasing"! When did that become a word?

There also seem to be some signs of a pretty rushed rewrite. For example, the section on Perl development (page xx) seems to confuse the old versioning system (where development versions have a patchlevel > 50) with the new one (where development versions have an odd number as the minor version). Both versions are explained but the author seems to think that they are both current. I'm guessing that half of it comes from Simon's original text.

I'll write a complete review in a few weeks.

Not in any dictionary that I looked it up in. That in itself may be a sign about the quality of the book.

Eh, I can't get excited about this sort of thing anymore. I remember all the moaning about "emailing" vs "mailing" and let's not forget "I'll IM you". Granted, poorly rewritten books are not the forces I wish to see driving the development of the English language, but we do have a long and honorable history of verbing nouns.
