I've started reading the Learning Perl blog that merlyn mentioned yesterday. The blog owner is reading the Badger book as well as the Llama.
In one post the author comments on the fact that the Badger book is full of examples taken from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Of course all of the authors are big H2G2 fans, but we were interested to find that Andy, Nat (our editor) and I were all regularly posting to alt.fan.douglas-adams about ten years ago.
It's a small internet.

there's also a precedent: one section of
Perl 6 Essentials (at a rough guess, the one Allison is to blame for) also uses H2G2 characters (and the ubiquitous 42) in examples.

I should express my heuristic ignorance: I saw H2G2 on TV as a kid but I've never read the books. I offended hex last year by walking past Hot Black Desiato in Camden and missing the point. I'm not a proper geek.

I read the Badger Book and I still managed to understand which parts of it came from Douglas Adams. Still, there weren't enough vampires.
In general I disliked this book. The authors chose the wrong TV shows, but I ended up learning lots about the separation of concerns. And something called stashes.
Fortunately, I now understand templating. For once it wasn't the butler. It was the badger...
