I finally heard back from Anna. It seems the job was with a well-known training company and they only schedule one Perl course every five weeks or so ("and even then, they cancel it if they don't have six people signed up"). The response to the ad was overwhelming and they sent a load of CVs over on Friday. They'll only send more over if all of the first lot were rejected.
The small mistake she made was telling me who the client is. There's now nothing stopping me from approaching them myself[1].
So I carry on looking. Someone out there must want to employ me.
[1] Well, other than morals - and we all know I have very few of those :)
