Python finds out about POD, WikiText

The python people are apparently now using something called reStructuredText (aka reST) for their documentation, as explained in this article. It's a bit like POD and a bit like WikiText, as ugly and brittle as any hybrid of those will naturally be.

Of course, when you scroll down you see one of their other official documentation formats, which is a derivate of DocBook. If that doesn't scare you, then you're ziggy or kip (Hi!). At any rate it would explain why they might consider reST an improvement.

Why is it that people continuously do their best to hurt themselves when it comes to documentation formats? Is there some form of lingering masochism? A fetish for the ugly?
