I had completely forgotten about it, but XML turned 5 yesterday. Happy birthday! With any luck, it'll soon be old enough that people will stop even thinking about it. I was hoping that would happen earlier, but there were (and still are) enough issues that it didn't.
I think the only luck involved is that XML happened to be born at the top of the dotcom boom, after all other overhyped technologies (Push, VRML, Plugins) had peaked and died. That left a lot of hype on poor little XML's shoulders. The overhype is starting to fade away; dealing with the pull of a thousand corporate masters is the next fronter. With any luck, it'll soon be old enough that people will stop even thinking about it.
