Teaching Perl to Kids

I have an interesting task at HighVision. There is a bright young man, 17 years old, who is learning Perl from me. It's a neat experience to teach a younger person. His brain is a spounge. The only problem is that he's not around very often.

I'd like to get him learning faster but it seems that we always do contrived examples. He never gets enough time to dive in deep. Any thoughts on how to speed things up with a limited amount of time?

Oh, that's a thought. "Learning Perl in 12 hours (at least enough to help with Database/CGI scripts)".

Oh well, back to coding.
