PPD project begins

First, some background: when I started learning Perl, there were six students taking those classes. One of us gave up before the end of the term. If the Perl documentation was in Portuguese instead of English, he would have at least concluded those classes. Instead, he's now a VB programmer.

And on to the announcement:

The Viana Perl Mongers are proud to announce the starting of:

PPD - Portuguese Perl Documentation

The name of the project in Portuguese is DPP - Documentação Perl em Português

Purpose: Create and distribute Perl documentation in Portuguese.

How: Probably by translating the Perl man pages.

We're not translating anything at the moment, we're merely announcing that we are, indeed, going to do it. We don't know how at the moment, so we're just considering the possible ways of undertaking this task.

We're also noting possible problems (when documents get new versions, for instance). We'll also wait until perl 5.8.8 is released to really start translating things, given that some changes to the documentation are expected (X tag, anyone?), but we're definitely going to do it and we're going to host it on the Viana.pm website.

Meanwhile, comments and suggestions are appreciated, especially from those who have undertaken a similar task with another language.

(and at this point I'll probably get an email from somebody saying something like "and what about that other thing you've promised to do a long time ago, when will you do *that*?")

another language other than Portuguese, not another language other than Perl :-)
