I'm working through the ruby book, reading it as if for pleasure but trying to make sure I slow down enough to work things out in my head.

This is the first pass. Second pass is when I write code after sections, trying to figure out how to apply each thing I've read about.

The documentation you're looking at is for 1.6.8. The 1.8.x series has been out over a year now (latest is 1.8.1). For a fairly good list of changes, go to http://dev.faeriemud.org/changes-1.8.0.html.
