Event: Technical Meeting
Date: Wednesday 28th March 2007
Times: from 7pm onwards (see below)
Venue: O'Neills, 90 Hurst Street, The Arcadian Centre, Birmingham
Details: http://birmingham.pm.org/cgi-bin/brum.pl?act=tech-next

Introduction:

A web and testing influenced technical meeting this month, with guest speakers Stuart 'Aq' Langridge and Tom Hukins. Aq may be better known to many as one of the four large gents of LUGRadio. And if you haven't heard of LUGRadio, then where have you been for the past few years. Hopefully we can also take the opportunity to get an update on LUGRadio Live 2007 while he's here too. Our good friend Tom is coming up from MiltonKeynes.pm to present a talk that he had planned to present at LPW last year. We'll be returning the favour with our attendance at the next MiltonKeynes.pm technical meeting, more details on that available next week.

If you've not attended a technical meeting recently, once you enter the pub through the main doors, walk straight on through the double doors into the band room on the left side of the building. If you're there early enough, we are usually scattered about the room, partaking of the food, while the actual presentations are held towards the back of the room in an area they usually cordon off for us.

We have a new projector and our own screen, so we don't have to rely on the backs of posters this month. Many thanks to Colin and MACS Software for the loan of their projector these past few months, it has been very much appreciated.

Talks:

The bundle of talks on offer this month are:

  • DOM Scripting, JavaScript, and Ajax [ Stuart 'Aq' Langridge ]
  • Selenium - An Introduction to Web Testing [ Barbie ]
  • FOSDEM - A Lightning Talk [ Richard Dawe ]
  • Testing When You Don't Have Time [ Tom Hukins ]

As always entry is free, with no knowledge of Perl required. We'd be delighted to have you along, so feel free to invite family, friends and colleagues ;)

Times:

These are the rough times for the evening:

  • food available: 6.00-7.30pm
  • talks: 8.00-10.00pm
  • pub closes: 11.00pm

Please note that beer will be consumed during all the above sessions ;)

Food:

Food is available until 8pm. I'll not be organising pre-orders for food this month, but a menu is available (click the link below), if you would like to decide before you get here. Please note that the menu below is a little out of date as they've changed a few items around, although pretty much everything on the list they still do. We normally start arriving from 6pm onwards, with most people arriving about 7pm.

Venue:

Technical meetings are held at O'Neills on Hurst Street, by The Arcadian Centre. We will be in the main function room ("the band room" if you've ever been there at the weekend). These days they accommodate us at the back of the function room (bear right as you walk through the double doors into the band room).

The venue is approximately 5-10 minutes walk from New Street station, and only slightly longer from the city centre. On street car parking is available on Hurst Street and Bromsgrove Street, free after 6pm, although as spaces are in short supply you may prefer to park in the NCP Arcadian multi-storey car park, entrance off Bromsgrove Street.
