FAT repair; HELP WANTED! :-)

ask on 2002-08-30T22:27:05

I have an image of a 1GB disk with photos from OSCON. The [something] is corrupted (no physical problems with the disk; just some VFAT foo that got messed up).

fsck.msdos can see that there are ~350 files on the disk, but I can only access about 120. I'd really really like to get the other files too. They were really nice photos. I'd be really happy.

Does anyone have better tools than me? (fsck.msdos). If so then I'll make the image available for download for the brave.

Please! Help! Leave a comment here or mail ask@perl.org.

update 1: trini @ #perl pointed out that it must be a VFAT partition, not a FAT.

update 1b: eh, make that FAT32, huh? Anyway: Not ext2; some kind of FAT partition.

update 2: I also tried accessing the image from vmware. I set it up as a loopback device and then tried setting up vmware to use /dev/loop0 as a raw device, but that just made vmware coredump (!).
