Baby Steps for OSS at Work

Today has been a good day for Open Source Software at work.

  • IT installed a Linux system to run MRTG on it. Normally they would have picked a commerical closed source solution on Windows, but someone set it up on a server for them as a demo and they were sold - or not as the case may be...
  • IT were happy with our plans to replace a Windows/IIS system with a Linux/Apache one, indeed they seemed positively happy.
  • My Apache/Perl/SAP application server is going well and people are looking to do other things with the technology. They are pleased when you show then what can be done, and then they can see extra business uses for the technology.
  • IT are struggling with Windows malware and Adware on machines that are on the Internet directly, rather than behind our corporate firewall. I've not quite got them to upgrade everyone to Firefox yet, but a few people have tried Firefox out, and not gone back to IE...!

Now, if only Firefox were tested and usable :-):

Too true, all software has bugs, mustn't be too confident...

There are good defects lists of all the browsers, on the Browser Dereliction Report, /* Position Is Everything */ and Quirks Mode.
