Test Your Backups!

Yesterday I installed MozCC to my Mozilla Firebird Browser, and managed to erase my Bookmarks.html file in the process!

Thankfully, I started to create backups on my system at home this weekend, nothing fancy just a tar.bz2 of key files on to another partition. The backup had worked perfectly, and I was able to recover my broken Bookmarks.html file.

Reminds me of an issue we had with Oracle several months ago. When upgrading from one version to another we needed to restore a *very important table* from a backup. Unfortunately, an ORA bug caused a particular table to be corrupted in the backup. Testing backups...very good idea.

I'm very happy I created a backup script, and tested it. Like you I've been bitten in the past by not making a backup, or having bad and/or out of date backups.
