roo

About this time of the year, I wonder about all the conferences I'm going to go to and all the talk I'm going to give. Then I do a little research and if I'm tempted, I go out a buy the latest, smallest, most powerful laptop. On Saturday, I got myself roo (all my laptops are named after Winnie the Pooh characters: pooh (doorstop material, IBM Thinkpad) tigger (Dell), piglet (HP Omnibook 500), and now roo (ibook)). This is my first Apple computer and it's all fine so far. I've spent the day abusing work bandwidth and downloading OS updates, fink, and well, more UNIXy things. I'm mostly happy with the fact that I got Office with it, and I'll be using Powerpoint to produce the slides this year. I finally got annoyed at magicpoint. roo's not the speediest of things though - hopefully the upcoming new version of OSX will solve that. Now I need a cool sticker to distinguish it from the other thousands of ibooks at TPC...

Powerpoint

If that nasty nasty mac[1] is too slow, you could always run it on piglet....
winex POWERPNT.EXE
Just don't say "YES" when it complains about the Office Assistant not being installed properly.

Battery life

Of course, the real reason I buy laptops is that it's impossible to get batteries for old laptop models and I end up with battery life of half an hour or so. Hopefully this will last long enough so I'm not always searching for a power point...
