For YAPC::Europe I recommend staying at: CAB INN Scandinavia. The rooms are very small and it's a few stops from the venue. But it's very practically CHEAP and closer to the center of town so you can spend more on Carlsberg and smørrebrød.
We can fly using SAS:

It's quite far ahead, but at least you have some plans now ;-)
The depth of despair that is Heathrow? Surely you jest? In the misery that is August? I'd much prefer the 15 minute check-in before departure at London City.

Don't get me wrong, I hate Heathrow and I honestly think it's the one single thing dragging the UK back to the dark ages. It's just that other airports are not practical for most people and 14 hours is quite a long time in a train...
