I've always wondered why text on Digital Video looks a little crap and due to the wonders of Wikipedia I know now why. It turns out it's due to chroma subsampling. PAL DV uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which means that the vertical resolution of the chroma is roughly halved. In other words, it's a compression artifact and in the future everything might well be actually lossless and better.
