If you ever think a thought along the lines of "hey, it'd be a wonderful idea if we fly back from holiday at night and land in on Monday morning just before heading to work" then please realise that it might be slightly tiring. Yawn. On the plus side, while in Hong Kong I purchased a new laptop: an Asus W5F which is ridiculously light (1.6kg compared to 2.4kg for the MacBook) and powerful Core 2 goodness. It came with Windows XP, which I found utterly hateful and have quickly replaced with Ubuntu, which is beautiful and Just Works.
This is all part of my plan to hack more C - sometimes you just need the speed & compact memory/disk usage. At the moment I am massively unproductive in my C hacking, but it's getting better...
I know the feeling about C. There are things I want to do that Perl just can't handle, so I'm working with C more and more. This makes me happy, but my C still sucks.

I've been doing a lot of Quicktime work, and I share your C-coding pain. I've been really tempted to write XS bindings for the Quicktime API several times.
On the other hand, I've found Objective-C to be quite pleasant. It's about as Perl-like as you can get and still be C, I think.
