I first read Managing Gigabytes seven years ago. It's quite an interesting book on compression and full text searching - there is lots of software that does that now. The weirdest thing is that seven years ago, gigabytes sounded like a large amount of data. These days a terabyte isn't particularly big. How big will my laptop HD be in seven years time?
Of course

Gigabytes don't seem so large anymore

"That depends what the meaning of 'big' is".
Indeed, folks were amazed at my HP hot-swapable 12GB RAID array back at the Dot.Com. Now I've got a 250MB external drive for backups at home.
We were doing full-text biblio retrieval, with abstracts loaded from multiple 100MB files on tapes. That was big not so very long ago.
