Conferences prices

No, this is not a dig at OSCON. Gnat wrote a great entry comparing RailsConf and YAPC::NA, so I thought I'd check out RailsConf Europe. The first thing that hit me is that RailsConf Europe is £575, while YAPC::Europe is £75. That's around eight times cheaper! Of course, that's RailsConf rather than RubyConf - RubyConf being around £100 IIRC. The comments on DHH's blog follow my line of thinking. Yow.

Or maybe I should compare this to £684 for ApacheConf Europe? Either way, it's a lot of money.

Another way to look at it...

The big expense for me on conferences is not the attendance fee, but the hotel stay and meals and getting there. YAPC may be $100, but it'd cost me closer to $1000 once all that is rolled in.

In addition to the "lost revenue" on the dates of the conference even if that's "only" vacation days used.
