The New Microsoft Office User Interface Overview

Check out The New Microsoft Office User Interface Overview, which is the new, task-oriented UI for 2007 Microsoft Office. Check out this higher res screenshot. (Aside: why do you need a .asp to serve a .png?)

It's all ever so curvy (even the window is curved!), with lots of light shadows and different curvy blue colours in the background. The typography all looks very nice too. What I'm wondering is what happens if you click in the space between the "Slides" and "Outline" tabs...

What happened to the File and Edit menus? I feel like I wouldn't know how to save from this screenshot...

Saving is easy still. Just click the icon of the floppy disk. It appears that the most used items from the edit menu are on the left (paste, cut, copy, etc...).

"floppy disk"? What's that? ;)

I'm guessing the "Save" is the little floppy icon at the (very) top left. "Save As" and such would probably be under the drop-down. The common Edit functions look like they're grouped under the clipboard thingie.

In the past I've hated the fact that each release of Office (and most MS software) keeps shuffling things around, but this time the changes look pretty radical, so it won't be confusing. Of course, this is all just guessing.

The floppy as a metaphor

Consequences most dire...

Probably something akin to this.

There was a good Baychi talk on the new Office 12 UI. You can download the video if you're interested. It's worth watching if you're into UI stuff.
