One of the people who was kind enough to explain my misconception, wrote back in response to my acute embarassment to let me know that he had been well into tracing this with gdb before he realized that it wasn't a bug after all... Ok, so I feel a little better, but still, *argh* :-)

On a side note, I happened to overhear a few of my roommates and their friends having a religious discussion mention something along the lines of the Lutherans being a subset of the Baptists. One of them saw the askance look I threw their way and re-mouthed for my benefit : Loofah-rins.
