I got called in for jury duty -- the first time in my life -- for the LA County Superior Court. I had asked to be excused for financial hardship since my wife doesn't work (well, she doesn't get paid ;-) and I get paid by the hour, but was rejected.
It's a very strange experience. The Superior Court has a "one day/one trial" policy, so I spent all day sitting in the jury room with about a hundred other grumpy people. No one was called in for service, and we were all sent home at the end of the day, having discharged our civic duty for another year.
Tomorrow I go back to work, but today feels like it was in the Twilight Zone: neither work, nor vacation, nor illness. I had no income, no family time, not even hearing a trial, just ... nothing.
