Why the USB port belongs in the front

I have a USB drive that I carry around. It has stuff I need at home, at work, remote offices, etc. At my client, all the machines are fairly new, and have a couple of USB ports on the front.

My home machine, which I built about five years ago, has one USB port in the back. It's a hassle to plug the drive in and out because I keep the machine under my desk.

Tonight I discovered a more important reason why the ports should be in the front: so when you go to unplug the thumb drive, you don't accidentally pull the power cord out too....

extensions to the rescue

I got myself an extension cable for USB so that I could more easily move the Intellimouse I have between my Mac (easily accessed) and the linux box (squeezed between the desk and the wall and the floor) .. I just draped the cable-end over the top of the cablemodem, where I can always grab at it easily. done deal. :) cheap solution too.

I did almost the same - I got a 4-port USB hub, they're getting quite cheap.
