Computer people classify better

This afternoon I decided to put up some Christmas lights around the house. Both my wife and I like to keep things tidy (not to use the phrase "OCD"), so I knew exactly where the plastic bins with the decorations were.

Pop quiz: which of the following labelled bins is likely to contain the outdoor lights:

  • "Xmas decorations"
  • "Misc Xmas"
  • "Xmas house decor"
  • "Xmas ornaments"

Well, it's a trick question, because they were on the bottom, in the box labelled "Lights".

My wife is a mathematician -- I don't think any computer person could have come up with the labels she put on the box. I would have made a tree diagram, or cooked up a small database. ("The lights? They're in the one labelled bin_id 347").
