I've been upset over the election the last few days, but that's a topic for another time.
Today I got my copy of the new (second) Pink Martini CD, entitled "Hang on little tomato". It's a fun and eclectic mix, very much, but entirely unlike, their first album, "Sympathique".
One great surprise was the second cut, "Anna (el negro zumbon)". I remember the song from when I was very little, like four or five. I would still occasionally hum it to myself, but I never knew what it was called. If you've ever seen Cinema Paradiso, you've heard it, on one of the movie clips. It's in black and white, from a 1950 film called "Anna", starring Silvana Mangano. In it, a sultry singer (Mangano) is singing a jazzy song with a group of black performers. When I saw the movie, I flipped. I thought, "I have to find it," but I never did -- until now.
It's a great album. China Forbes has a voice that soothes the soul.
