Perl IRC

I've never really used IRC before, and I thought I might give it a try. Yesterday I tried connecting to #perl on EFNet, DALnet, and freenode.net. I hardly saw anyone I recognized, either from here or from Perl Monks, or from work. The conversations weren't really about Perl either. (I suppose I should be used to that from the PM chatterbox. ;-) But there was a lot of berating of newbies.

Am I looking in the wrong server/channel? Or do the cool Perl folks just not use IRC?

Am I looking in the wrong server/channel?

irc.perl.org will round robin between various IRC servers on the right network. #perl is probably a reasonable channel to start in.

#perl on freenode isn't bad, but you won't recognize most of the people there probably. Yes, there tend to be a lot of newbies there, especially of the, "I don't know Perl at all - can you help me?" variety. I've learned to just put these people on my ignore list asap. Too much noise, otherwise.

If you're looking for the "famous" Perl folks, look on irc.perl.org (or is it perl.irc - I forget). Don't be surprised by lots of OT conversations there as well. ;)

Me? I'm trying to cut back on IRC. It's a giant time suck.
