I went to the Codeweavers site again, and found my previous purchase made me eligible for a new version of their installer for Crossover. After I downloaded and ran it, I have Shockwave and Quicktime on my spanking-new Fedora Core 2 box.
Did I mention I like Crossover? I was willing to pay for an upgrade, and they gave me a free one.
So now I can play Fowl Words again.
Hmmm... Maybe that wasn't such a great advance.
