New contract, old friends

I started at my new client contract Monday. I got the job thru people that I've worked with many times in the past. It's really nice to be around them again.

The work is pretty mundane so far. I'm working on DB2 and SQL Server on AIX and NT. The software I'm allowed to install on anything is limited and tightly controlled. It's so weird not to have bash, vim, all the stuff I'm used to. They have Perl on AIX, although it's only up to 5.005_02.

It's also weird that my acquaintances, whom I know pretty well, are all on a business rather than technical level. I haven't had a conversation about any "pure programming" topics, like the ones I have here or on Perlmonks. It's sort of:

"I think Larry Wall had a great idea, making regular expressions a new kind of first-order object in Perl 6."
"Huh?"
