Dear Log,
Why oh why does my little MSWin laptop seem to collect fonts like some people's navels collect lint? It came with uncountably many, and once I'd installed WordPerfect and a few other things, I had literally dozens of froufrou script fonts, Bookman-clones, and other things that would be just peachy for a wacky interoffice flyer about how it's gonna be Kathi's birthday next week!!!, but which are pointless on this machine that I hardly ever even hook up to a printer.
I normally just ignore the horrors of it all, but I looked in the Fonts directory today, and it had nearly 500 items. I do a lot of multilingual stuff, so I like to say things like "Well, one never knows when one needs to skim a document in Prakrit!" to justify having a few dozen fonts that provide things outside the usual Latin-1characters. But really. Do I giddily moved about three hundred things out of the fonts directory, and I then went wild killing things in my Netscape plugins directory. I'd swear things are quite faster now.
Now if I were clever enough to go tracking down all the unused/underused things that the system loads at bootup... such much cruft
