SAP

Dear Log,

US televisions have SAP ("Secondary Audio Program") sideband(s). When they're used at all, they're sometimes used to simulcast the show in a second language (typically Spanish; "¡Siéntate, gorda!"), or sometimes with descriptive audio for blind people ("DEWEY ENTERS, CARRYING A HUGE BOWL OF JELLO").

But rarely do programs ever actually use the SAP subchannel. But now I have a good idea for them: use it for the unexpurgated version of the audio track. Call it "Swearing Audio Program" if you like.

This idea came to me as I was watching the BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION, The Osbournes! Whenever anyone (especially Ozzy) talks, every other word is bleeped out. I pay $40/month for cable, and I feel short-changed if I can't hear Ozzy say "fook" every three seconds, instead hearing that loud annoying 1000Hz beep!

I want to turn on the SAP and revel in the lower-class trans-Atlantic invective!

Come to Australia...

I'm not a heavy watcher of the show (which just started a few weeks ago down here), but it's not all bleeped out. And thank goodness --- they all swear like crazy. I'm surprised you don't just get continuous beeeeeeeep from start until finish.

Dark side of Oz

A while back (several fourth of july's ago, as I recall), one of the Turner stations broadcast The Wizard of Oz, and used the SAP channel to play Dark Side of the Moon... a wonderful use of the channel, in my opinion!
