Dear Log,
I've been thinking about what an amazing train-wreck the Dune books are. On the one hand, it's a wonderful nimbus of wingnut ideas. On the other hand, there's hardly a trace of humor. So Frank Herbert was the anti-Sterling.

I've just finished reading the 7 books, and just starting on the preludes.
I have to say that I would happily get rid off all but the first two. I'd keep the first one only to provide a setting for Messiah. It's marvellous seeing Paul's plot end, but the Tyrant is somewhat dull, and post-Tyrant appears to have mislaid the plot.
Mind you, I wouldn't mind knowing what was to have happened next.
The preludes, so far, seem to written in a very auto-sf/fantasy manner. It's like reading Eddings.
