OGGs

Dear Log,

The default bitrate settings for CDEX's OGG encoding seem pretty high. I mean, I rip things and get these great big OGGs. That's fine, because they're really good. But I've found that if I drop the bitrates, I get files that are smaller than 128kbps MP3s, and sound much better. In fact, I can't tell them at all from the much higher bitrate OGGs. My current happy settings are a nominal bitrate of 96 kbps, and a max bitrate of 128 kpbs.

The only bummer is that ripping an OGGs of something takes like two or three times as long time as ripping MP3s. But I'm happy since it sounds better, and comes out shorter.

OGG vs. MP3

How much better are OGG files than standard MP3 files? The re-encoding process doesn't bother me; most of that can happen when I'm away from one or two of my computers. But this does have some implications for someone looking to purchase an MP3 jukebox...
