Dear Log,

An English word mostly absent in US English, but common elsewhere:
whinge: to complain annoyingly

Isn't that just an alternate (and IMO worse) spelling of "whine"? Or is it a different word altogether?

No, because "whinge" and "whine" sound different and mean different things.

BTW, "whinge" rhymes with "hinge".

OK; when I first saw it, I thought it would be pronounced that way, but for some reason I came to think that it was just an alternate spelling for "whine." Hmmm.

To whinge is a long term thing. To whine is short term. At least that's how I would differentiate.
