Proportions of doom

Dear Log,

An old adage in computerlandia says: Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by incompetence.

I observe that incompetence is a limitless recource, which is a practical way of saying that it is infinite. But the estimation of how much of the world's awfulness is due to incompetence versus malice requires considering the proportion of one to the other; and normally one would suppose that an infinity of incompetence drowns out any amount of malice.

But these days, malice too seems to be limitless, and the question of how to evaluate an infinity divided by infinity is an open issue in applied higher mathematics.
