I came across two delightful proverbs today:
Gajus Sallustius Crispus: "The whole point of autocracy is that accounts will not come right unless the ruler is their only auditor."
What it loses in clarity, it gains in accountancy.
And this traditional Haitian proverb: "Bay kou bliye, pote mak sonje -- He who hits, forgets; he who is hit, remembers."
This proverb demonstrates how primitive and folksy Haiti is. If Haiti were a modern land like the USA (God Shed His Grace On Thee), the proverb would be: "He who is beaten, dies anonymously -- He who beat him to death, bitterly ruminates on an elaborate backstory about how the beaten man was evil."
