Dear Log,

As yet another circuitous twist in my plan for world domination, I'm working on an online-browseable implementation of the Clock of the Long Now's chimes algorithm. I've been working on it for a few days now, and having odd little discrepencies here and there. My Perl implementation of the numeric algorithm agrees perfectly with the original specs and numeric test-data that the Long Now people sent me; but when I turn it into MIDI and check it by ear that against the actual track 8 on the Eno CD, the fit hasn't quite right.

I finaly girude out that numbers for each day's chimes are to be rung backwards. With that adjustment, suddenly everything works perfectly. Yay! So I should have something to show off to y'all in two or three days.

(Of course, this could have been ironed out at the beginning if I'd gotten the bell tones from Brian Eno, but he's on tour right now, so the Long Now people can't get the files from him and to me just now. Or, more simply, if I had a better sense of tone, I'd have been able to hear the first six chimes and said "hm, the first two tones are the same in the first four chimes, whereas the numbers say it should be the last two tones in the first four chimes." But anyhoo. I figured it out eventually, although it did involve a bit of a blind alley.)
