Dear Log,
The Baghdad segment here is scary. Iraq is screwed -- like Pol Pot screwed, Killing Fields screwed.
«We've seen it in other totalitarian regimes... Pol Pot's Kampuchea... the intellectuals and the professional class are amongst the first to go onto the carcas heap because then you have a population you can mold to your will.»True, Iraq has been a mess for ages, but never this bad. I'm starting to worry that it's getting to a point where more and nastier people will have more and nastier problems that might be solvable only by, say, arranging for an "accident" that, say, turns most of the country into a radioactive/biotoxic no-man's-land. (I've always thought that the potential role for apparent accidents (or other sorts of misattributable acts) has been greatly underestimated in current ideas of terrorism, warfare, genocide, and other forms of ickiness.)
