Dear Log,

Ancient color photography. (And my fave)

I've seen them!

I saw an exhibit of Prokudin-Gorskii's photos on display in the lobbby of Library of Congress back in probably 1987. They're even more amazing in person. It's not just that they're color photos a generation older than any you've ever seen (though of course with the subject matter many appear to be much older than that), but they're also quite good quality considering his primative tools.

I love those

I've seen these before, on the web -- wish I could see them in person some time.

Does anyone else get the weird sensation that these are modern actors, dressed-up? This is from before they invented color!

Calvin: Dad, how come old photographs are always black and white? Didn't they have color film back then?

Calvin's Dad: Sure they did. In fact, those old photographs ARE in color. It's just the WORLD was black and white then.

Calvin: Really?

Calvin's Dad: Yep. The world didn't turn color until sometime in the 1930s, and it was pretty grainy color for a while, too.
