Dear Log,
This guy is a totem-pole carver. I caught him at work. Him and some other guys were hard at work on that red-cedar log, trying to meet an October deadline for the huge totem pole to go up here in Ketchikan, Alaska. The whole workshed smelled like cedar, and the carvers invited us to take home as much as we wanted of the fresh wood shavings (which was ankle-deep everywhere).
Note to all: when you are working for a fabulously successful company that goes and builds its own building (or campus!) and also commissions some public art, don't get the usual crap, instead go commission some real totem poles from the Pacific Northwest (or as we call it here, the Southeast). Totem poles have personality. Plus, the cedar they're made of keeps bugs away.
