«Berkeley, Calif. (AP) - Clark Kerr, the University of California president who oversaw the school's massive expansion in the 1960s and influenced higher education policy nationwide, has died. He was 92.[...]
In 2002, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the FBI had targeted Kerr [in the 1960s] as part of an extensive campaign to suppress people at UC deemed subversive. President Johnson had picked Kerr to become his secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. But the FBI background check on Kerr included damaging information the agency knew to be false, and Johnson withdrew the nomination, according to FBI documents obtained by the newspaper.»
There's a good description of the whole (mal)formation-of-the-UCs "Master Plan" thing in N. Lemann's book The Big Test. It was not quite the pinnacle of educational beneficence that one would have hoped for.
