Dear Log,
In Juneau, it was basically a mistake getting a land-line phone -- I should have just gotten a cellphone; I resolved to do just this when I got to Ketchikan. But here in Ketchikan, land lines are cheaper than in Juneau; and getting a cellphone (Cellular One has a local monopoly on selling phone+plan packages) is a hassle comparable only to getting a mortgage on a house, on an Indian reservation, using a third-party Canadian check as the downpayment.
So it's time for a land-line phone again.
Speaking of monopolies, the cable company is horribly backed up -- I won't have a signal for at least three weeks. I'm thinking of just calling the company back and telling them I'll pay the service guy an extra $40 to come out and do it sooner, on his lunch hour or whatever. As local jobs go, I bet that being a cable guy beats working in one of the fish "processing" plants -- but not by much. So he deserves an extra $40.
